How To Look After Prints

Looking after your new print you purchased is important; it's an investment and a joy to have a beautiful print in your home. Spending your money, you will want to look after, below, I will explain how to look after your investment to enjoy for years.

How to Look After Prints in Your Home

Beautiful wall art can transform a room, but proper care is important if you want your prints to remain vibrant and attractive for years. From choosing the right location to cleaning and hanging your artwork, a few simple precautions can make a significant difference.

Choose the Right Location

Avoid placing prints where they receive strong direct sunlight for long periods. Ultraviolet light can gradually cause colors to fade, particularly with photographic and fine-art paper. A wall away from direct sunlight is usually preferable.

Try to avoid areas with excessive humidity, heat, or temperature changes. Bathrooms, kitchens, locations directly above radiators, and damp exterior walls may not be ideal for valuable artwork.

Keep artwork away from fireplaces and heating vents, where heat and dry air can affect some materials.

Cleaning Your Prints

The safest cleaning method depends on the print medium.

Paper prints: Dust the frame and glazing gently with a soft, clean microfiber cloth. Avoid spraying glass cleaner directly onto the frame or artwork.

Canvas prints: Use a clean, dry, soft brush or microfiber cloth to gently remove surface dust. Avoid pressing into the canvas and never saturate the surface with water unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.

Acrylic prints: Remove dust with a soft microfiber cloth. For fingerprints or marks, use a cleaner specifically recommended for acrylic rather than an ordinary glass cleaner, which can damage some acrylic surfaces.

Metal prints: A soft microfiber cloth is usually sufficient for removing dust and fingerprints. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for stubborn marks.

Never use abrasive cloths, harsh chemicals, or excessive moisture on a print.

How to Hang Prints

Before hanging artwork, consider its size, weight, wall construction, and the type of hanging system supplied with the print.

Large or heavy pieces should be secured using appropriate wall anchors or fixings rather than relying on a small nail. On plasterboard or drywall, use fixings designed for the weight of the artwork.

As a general guideline, artwork is often most comfortable to view when its center is around eye level. When hanging several pieces together, treat the collection as one overall composition rather than positioning each picture independently.

Leave enough space around the artwork so that it does not feel crowded by furniture, shelves, or other wall decorations.

Protecting Your Investment

For valuable photographic prints, consider UV-protective glazing and archival-quality mounting materials. These can help reduce the effects of light exposure and environmental conditions.

Most importantly, keep your prints clean, dry, away from prolonged direct sunlight, and securely mounted. With the right location and gentle care, your wall art can remain a beautiful part of your home for many years.
