My late grandfather, Ernest, was photographed in the late 1940s, and I am the proud owner of this photograph. The cathedral is a design masterpiece of French Gothic architecture, engineered to perfection, innovation, and medieval artistry, and a national heritage.
Notre Dame Cathedral is located in the heart of this beautiful city in Paris, France.
The structure, built without modern help, features twin 69-meter towers, rib vaults, pointed arches, and the famous flying buttresses. The construction of the cathedral began under King Louis VII in 1163, under Bishop Maurice de Sully direction.
This Gothic cathedral took nearly 200 years to build, from 1163 to 1345, because of money shortages, extreme medieval technical problems, the onset of wars, and plagues.
In 2019, the cathedral had a terrible fire that started due to a cigarette or an electrical short circuit in the wooden spire. It cost millions for the reconstruction and resulted in a major loss of history and parts of the cathedral that will never be recovered.
