The Siuslaw River Bridge is a historic landmark in Florence, Oregon, carrying U.S. Highway 101 across the Siuslaw River. Built between 1934 and 1936, the bridge was designed by renowned Oregon bridge engineer Conde B. McCullough as part of the Oregon Coast Highway project. It opened to traffic in 1936, replacing the ferry that had previously carried travelers across the river.
The bridge is notable for its graceful concrete arches and distinctive Art Deco-inspired architectural details. McCullough combined engineering with decorative design, creating a structure that was both functional and visually elegant. The bridge measures approximately 1,568 feet in length and includes a central drawspan designed to allow boats to travel along the navigable river.
Its construction was an important development for Florence and the Oregon Coast because it provided a permanent highway crossing and improved transportation along the coastal route. The bridge became part of the growing road network that connected communities along Oregon’s shoreline and encouraged increased automobile travel.
Today, the Siuslaw River Bridge remains an important part of Florence’s landscape and transportation history. Its sweeping arches stand above the river, surrounded by forested hills and coastal scenery.
