The historic Siuslaw River Bridge is one of Florence, Oregon’s most recognizable landmarks, carrying U.S. Highway 101 across the Siuslaw River. Completed in 1936, the bridge was designed by celebrated Oregon engineer Conde B. McCullough as part of the Oregon Coast Highway. Its construction replaced ferry service and created a permanent highway connection across the river, helping improve travel along the Oregon Coast.

The bridge is admired for its combination of engineering and architectural detail. Its sweeping concrete arches give the structure an elegant profile, while decorative features reflect the Art Deco style popular during the period. A central drawspan was incorporated into the design so that river traffic could continue beneath the highway crossing.

Surrounded by forested hills and the waterways of the central Oregon Coast, the bridge is particularly striking when viewed from Florence’s waterfront. The changing light can emphasize the curves of the arches, while boats and reflections on the Siuslaw River add movement to the scene.

More than a transportation link, the Siuslaw River Bridge represents an important chapter in Oregon’s road-building history. Today, it remains an active highway crossing and a treasured historic structure.
